Inhibition & Control

Go / No-Go Task

Assess response inhibition by pressing for Go stimuli and withholding responses for No-Go stimuli.

Estimated duration: 2–4 minutes

About This Experiment

The Go/No-Go task is a foundational paradigm in cognitive neuroscience for measuring response inhibition — the ability to suppress a prepotent motor response. On each trial, a colored circle appears: green circles are Go stimuli requiring a key press, while red circles are No-Go stimuli requiring you to withhold your response. Because Go trials are more frequent, you build up a strong tendency to respond, making it harder to inhibit on the occasional No-Go trial. Commission errors (pressing on No-Go trials) reflect failures of inhibitory control, a core component of executive function that is impaired in conditions such as ADHD, substance use disorders, and traumatic brain injury.

How It Works

  1. A colored circle appears on each trial after a fixation cross.
  2. Press the spacebar when you see a green circle (Go trial).
  3. Do not press when you see a red circle (No-Go trial).
  4. Most trials are Go trials — resist the urge to press on No-Go trials.

Key Metrics

Commission Errors

Number of times you pressed on No-Go trials (failures of inhibition)

Go Accuracy

Percentage of Go trials with a correct response

No-Go Accuracy

Percentage of No-Go trials where you successfully withheld

Mean Go RT

Average response time on correct Go trials
